What is happening to you, America?

Another shooting?

Despite your latest faults — like the war in Iraq — many liberal minded people around the world still look up to you. For them, you are the paragon of democracy, freedom and civil rationalism. Many emulate your economic model, even if with some local adjustments; others hope to establish an enlightened regime like yours in their home countries. And some harbor a long-cherished wish to land one day on the shores of California, New England or Florida — to never step off.

Are all these people just being naive and credulous?

You claim moral superiority to such nations as China, where admittedly civil rights have been and are still being violated. But it seems that your own leniency has only led to an anti-social rampage and a gross devaluation of human life. And the right to live, allow me to remind you, is the most fundamental of them all.

The most unsettling fact about these shootings are the reasons, that is, the lack of any. Someone who feels inadequate, or unpopular, or somehow resentful, goes home, takes a gun, loads it, returns to the place where the offence took place, and starts shooting everybody. Sometimes randomly, sometimes not — it doesn’t matter — the chain of events contains so many irrational links, another one won’t change a thing. Finally, the shooter kills himself; they almost always do.

It’s as if they are afraid to face the consequences. What would they tell their interrogators? “I was angry?” “They called me names?” “They put some salt in my coffee?” I think the questions would be more difficult to deal with than a lifetime in jail. I think they know they would continue asking themselves these questions for the rest of their lives — they cannot bear the thought of it, and dispatch themselves in what appears like a cowardly solution.

So What is happening to you, America?

Are you still the bastion of rationality so many people know you for? Or have the weeds grown through the walls, rendering them shaky, unstable and unreliable?

I don’t think you can so simply characterize (or better yet - mischaracterize) an entire nation based on the faults of a crazy, trigger happy, minority.

But that minority appears to grow in numbers each passing day, Tristan.

What do you propose we should do about this R.M.?

”Appears to grow” is a very irresponsible statement. In fact, many people think it ”appears” flying on a plane is more dangerous than driving a car, because plane crashes are more spectacular than car crashes and therefore more memorable. But the reality is that it is much much safer to fly than drive, and people who fear planes but not cars are simply irrational.

America’s crime rate has been falling for a long time now, particularly in big cities like New York. America is a free society, and pays for it with incidents of excessive individual freedom. China is a closed society, and pays for it with incidents like Tiannamen Square, incidents of governmental brutality.

Say what you like about America, but the fact remains that millions of people from other countries are still waiting in line for a chance to live here. Not many around the world think of starting a new life by going to China — or Russia, where they could live under a proud KGB spy.

There is no questioning about personal freedom and societal openness in America.

Well, when you have a lot of personal freedom, you pay for it with more crime than other countries have.

Russia’s murder rate is 16.5/100,000 compared to America’s murder rate of 5.7. Mexico is 13.04. Thailand is 8.47. Maybe you should start getting worried about those countries instead of America?

It’s true that America’s murder rate is higher than Israel’s at 2.62, in fact nearly double it, but both are quite low and Americans don’t want to live in a security state like Israel, which is also a much smaller country and therefore easier to manage and control.

Europe gives far fewer rights to citizens and especially those accused of crimes than America, so naturally its murder rate will be a bit lower. But Europe stifles individual freedom and does not lead the world in innovation as America does.

It may very well be that you have to have few Son of Sams in order to have a bunch of Bill Gateses.

Actually, Israel seems like a lot less safe country to live in, but not for the reasons of crime — we have problems on the international level.

America’s ”personal freedom” has its roots in the Magna Carta of England, the works of Voltaire of France, and many more like them in the pre-modern and early modern Europe.

On the one hand, I agree with Kim on this one, bit on the other I agree with R.M. too, and I think he asks questions that must be asked. What is the price of freedom? How much freedom should be taken in order for the rest to be free? How can we deal with the paradox of giving up freedoms in order to be more free (from crime, etc?). These are all difficult questions, and the rise in the number of rampant shootings such as this one makes them more relevant than ever. It’s complicated...
